This proclamation recognizes Nowruz, meaning “new day,” as a significant event celebrated for over 3,000 years across diverse communities spanning the Middle East, Central Asia, and beyond. An ancient festival that marks the vernal equinox and the arrival of spring, it symbolizes rebirth, renewal, and the enduring spirit of humanity, embodying universal values of tolerance and cultural diversity.

The proclamation was celebrated during a vibrant gathering at City Hall, where Mayor Johnson welcomed representatives from Iranian, Afghan, Kurdish, Turkish, and Central Asian communities. “It was an honor to celebrate Nowruz at City Hall,” the Mayor stated, expressing gratitude for the rich tapestry of cultures that enrich Chicago. He also thanked Kabobi Grill for their generous food donation, reinforcing the spirit of community and togetherness. This year marked a historic milestone, as the Kurdish community was represented for the first time at an official event in the Mayor’s Office, highlighting the importance of inclusion and recognition for Chicago’s diverse immigrant cultures.

“For the first time, Kurds were represented at an event in the Chicago Mayor’s Office,” remarked Rewan Zagros, Outreach Chairperson of the Kurdish Cultural Center of Illinois (KCCI). “A heartfelt thank you to everyone from the KCCI who supported us along the way. This is your achievement.” The KCCI’s directors reflected on the day’s significance, noting the pleasure of connecting with members of the Ismaili, Iranian, Afghan, and Central Asian communities during this vibrant celebration.
