Dindar Zebari, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Coordinator for International Advocacy, will participate in the 48th Session of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
The session will take place from January 25-31 at the UN Headquarters in Geneva and will review the fourth report of the Republic of Iraq.
It is expected to be attended by representatives from over 100 member states, delegates of the UN Human Rights Council, and prominent civil society organizations specializing in human rights, all of whom will engage in comprehensive discussions on key human rights issues.
“In the past four years, we have demonstrated our commitment to advancing human rights and strengthening institutional frameworks by ensuring significant progress to fulfill international obligations as recommended by the last UPR. This includes aligning governance processes with international standards,” Zebari said in a statement received by Kurdistan Chronicle.
He added that his presentation will “underscore the Kurdistan Region’s dedication to upholding human rights principles, showcasing our commitment to align with international human rights standards to Representatives of Member States, the Human Rights Council, and relevant organizations.”
The UPR is a human rights mechanism conducted every four years, requiring each UN member state to submit a National Report outlining its commitment to human rights.
The states to be reviewed during this session are Angola, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, El Salvador, Fiji, The Gambia, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, San Marino, and Slovenia.
The discussions will assess the country’s report on its human rights situation, providing an opportunity for critical evaluation and dialogue.
