Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Saturday spoke by phone with U.S. Representative Michael Waltz, recently designated as National Security Advisor by President-elect Donald Trump.
According to the KRG readout, the discussion focused on regional developments and ways to enhance regional stability and bilateral relations.
During the call, Prime Minister Barzani congratulated Representative Waltz on his new role, commending his deep understanding of security and regional dynamics.
They also discussed the outcomes of the recent elections in both the Kurdistan Region and the United States, emphasizing the significance of these democratic milestones in shaping the future of governance and international cooperation.
Moreover, the KRG said that the conversation underscored the Kurdistan Region’s critical role as a reliable partner of the United States in the region, committed to shared values and the pursuit of peace and security.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of collective efforts to address evolving challenges and ensure lasting stability.
Prime Minister Barzani and Representative Waltz reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the strong partnership between the Kurdistan Region and the United States.
Waltz is a member of the Kurdish American Caucus and has repeatedly lobbied for better treatment of the Kurdistan Region by Baghdad.
On November 6, Prime Minister Barzani congratulated Trump on his re-election as the President of the United States.

At the 2024 Middle East Peace and Security (MEPS) Forum in late November, Prime Minister Barzani expressed his optimism about the new administration that is being formed by U.S. President-elect Trump following the November 5 U.S. elections.

Prime Minister Barzani also added that the KRG “definitely has friends among the people that we hear are being considered to be in the next government.”
