On Thursday, December 19, 2024, President Masoud Barzani received Yann Braem, France’s Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, and discussed the recent meetings between Kurdish parties to form a new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet.

Consul General Braem in a post on X said that during his meeting with President Barzani, he held in-depth discussions on ongoing talks for the formation of the KRG, the security and political situation in Syria and its impact on regional stability, and relations between France and the Kurdistan Region.

On October 20, during the Kurdistan parliamentary elections, over two million people cast their votes at more than 7,000 polling stations, resulting in a voter turnout of 72%.

Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission in late November ratified the results of the Kurdistan Parliament’s sixth-term elections, with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leading with 39 seats, followed by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan with 23, and the New Generation Movement with 15.

The Barzani Headquarters said in a readout that the discussions revolved around the steps to form the new cabinet of the KRG and the outcomes of meetings between various parties.

“President Barzani elaborated on the content of the KDP’s discussions with political factions, emphasizing their continued commitment to inclusive dialogue and mutual understanding with all parties to expedite this process and form a government based on the results of the elections,” the Barzani headquarters said.

Furthermore, the situation in Syria – along with the dangers posed by the resurgence of terrorism and instability in the region – were also central topics in the meeting.

Regarding these issues, President Barzani expressed hope for peace and stability for the people of Syria and called for resolving internal conflicts through dialogue and mutual understanding.

Additionally, he highlighted the need to address the situation of Kurds in Syria within the framework of their legitimate rights and aspirations for the future of the country.

On December 15, President Barzani welcomed a statement by Syria’s de facto leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, regarding the Kurdish people in Syria, in which al-Sharaa described the Kurdish people as part of the homeland and partners in the future of Syria.

“We hope that this marks the beginning of correcting the course of history and rectifying the wrong and unjust practices that have been committed against the Kurdish people in Syria,” President Barzani said.
