Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani on Wednesday visited the Kurdistan Region to discuss relations between Erbil and Baghdad and expressed his readiness to assist the Kurdish political parties to form a government.

“I’m pleased to welcome Prime Minister Mohamed Shia’ back to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq,” Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani posted on X.
“Our agenda: budgetary payments, census, regional security, and economic growth.”
The Iraqi Prime Minister’s Media Office in a readout said that Iraqi Prime Minister al-Sudani congratulated KRG Prime Minister Barzani on the successful Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections in October and stressed the need to form a new government, adding that Baghdad is willing to assist in that matter.

Moreover, the two leaders discussed “the efforts to resume oil exports from the region.”
On March 25, 2023, Kurdish crude exports through Turkiye were stopped after an international arbitration court ruled in favor of Baghdad against Ankara.

On November 5, the Iraqi Council of Ministers decided to amend the Iraqi budget law, which could pave the way for the resumption of the Kurdistan Region’s oil exports.
Iraqi Prime Minister al-Sudani also stressed the importance of implementing the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq’s decision regarding the salaries of government employees in the Kurdistan Region.
Iraqi Prime Minister al-Sudani also highlighted the necessity of maintaining political stability in the Kurdistan Region, noting that it is a vital part of the foundation for stability in Baghdad and Iraq as a whole.

In a separate meeting, Iraqi Prime Minister al-Sudani also met with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.
The Kurdistan Region Presidency in a readout stated that the both officials emphasized the importance of resolving outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad through constructive dialogue and adherence to the Iraqi Constitution.
Both parties also stressed the necessity for Iraq to avoid regional conflicts and for all national actors to collaborate on maintaining security and stability.
