Kurdish Leaders Receive Invitation to COP29

On July 22, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani received an invitation to attend the upcoming 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

COP29 will take place from November 11-24, 2024.

In a post on X on July 22, KRG Department of Foreign Relations Head Safeen Dizayee announced that Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Iraq Nasir Mammadov had presented an official invitation for both President Barzani and Prime Minister Barzani to attend the upcoming climate conference.

The Kurdistan Region Presidency in a press release also stated that KRG President of Diwan Fawzi Franso Hariri met with Ambassador Mammadov.

The two officials discussed the development of Azerbaijan’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and developments in the region in general.

Ambassador Mammadov expressed his country’s desire to expand relations with the Kurdistan Region and stressed that the July 2023 visit of Kurdistan Region President to Baku and his meeting with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has opened a new chapter in Azerbaijan’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

In February 2024, Prime Minister Barzani offered his congratulations to President Aliyev on his re-election.

Moreover, in that same month, President Aliyev verbally invited his Kurdish counterpart to COP29 on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
