Kurdistan Has a Lot to Offer: Dutch Analyst

Economist Erik J. Prins, the head of Atlas Geopolitical Affairs, visited Erbil from April 12-18 and was fascinated by the Kurdistan Region’s beautiful nature and welcoming people.

“I am a geopolitical analyst. I am involved in international relations, mainly focused on the Middle East and North Africa. My work is a combination of science, journalism, and politics. I give guest lectures at universities, supervise projects of the Greater Middle East Platform, provide advice, including to embassies, and sometimes I supervise students,” he told Kurdistan Chronicle.

“I travel a lot through countries in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as beyond.”

In 2022, he visited Kurdistan for the first time. “I quickly knew that wouldn’t be the last time. Kurdistan is a fascinating region with vibrant cities, beautiful nature, and very friendly and hospitable people. A visa can be applied for quickly and easily online.”

He said that he never felt unsafe in the Kurdistan Region. “Of course, it is sometimes a bit restless in the Middle East. But this is not so noticeable in Kurdistan. Given the tensions in surrounding countries, it is wise to keep an eye on travel advice.”

During his trip he visited several locations, including the Yezidi holy place of Lalish during the Yezidi New Year on April 14.

“The visit to Lalish for the Yezidi New Year was very impressive. It was very special for me to be present at one of the most important and oldest holidays of the Yazidis.”

“It is an enchanting spectacle when thousands of candles are lit during sunset. The visit to Lalish was a highlight of my trip.”

He also visited Shaqlawa, Hamilton Road, Bekhal Waterfalls, Rawanduz, and Akre.

“I found Akre and Hamilton Road particularly impressive. The route gave an excellent picture of Kurdistan, with its beautiful nature.”

He recommended that other travelers visit Kurdistan in the springtime. “The months of March, April, and May are an excellent time to visit Kurdistan.”

“The climate is pleasant and nature is overwhelmingly beautiful. My previous visit to Kurdistan took place in July. That is not the best time to travel, as it is scorching hot then.”

He underlined that Kurdistan is a beautiful region with proud, friendly, and hospitable inhabitants.

“Kurdistan really has a lot to offer. Erbil boasts its citadel and the historic bazar, as well as beautiful shopping malls, such as the recently opened Gulan Mall. Erbil and Sulaymaniyah both have many excellent restaurants. And then, of course, there is the enchantingly beautiful nature.”
