Zakho Marks Anniversary with New Hospital and International Exhibition
September 22, 2025

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Sunday opened Zakho’s first international exhibition and inaugurated the new Children’s Hospital on the fourth anniversary of the founding of Zakho’s autonomous administration.

“Today, we opened the Zakho Children’s Hospital, with advanced facilities constructed to high standards,” Prime Minister Barzani said. “I hope that this hospital will effectively serve patients, particularly children, so that they will not need to seek treatment elsewhere.”

Furthermore, Prime Minister Barzani opened the first international exhibition in Zakho, featuring over 100 local and international companies and their products.

Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also marked the first day of the 2025/26 school year.

“I hope this year will be filled with achievements and joy for our students. I want to express my gratitude to the parents supporting their children in school and to the teachers for their dedication and nationalism.”

In July 2021, the KRG Council of Ministers approved Zakho and Soran as autonomous administrations, in a meeting led by Prime Minister Barzani.

“Today also marks the anniversary of the establishment of Zakho’s autonomous administration,” Prime Minister Barzani said at the opening of the school year. “I congratulate all of you and the people of Zakho and hope the city continues to progress. Over recent years, through the dedication and hard work of Zakho’s citizens and administrators, we have witnessed significant development.

“Today, Zakho’s development is visible to all, attracting attention from across Kurdistan, Iraq, and the region. We also have several ongoing projects to provide more services to the people of Zakho, including the reopening of the Children’s Hospital, the international exhibition, and the second phase of Zakho Corniche, which has become one of the most beautiful places in the Kurdistan Region.”

As part of the Kurdistan Region’s ongoing efforts to boost tourism, the Zakho Promenade – commonly known as the Corniche – was renovated with a total investment of 6 billion Iraqi dinars.

Stretching 3 kilometers, the promenade features more than 50% green space and 8-meter-wide pedestrian walkways on both sides. It includes a variety of public amenities such as restaurants, cafes, and tourist boats. Once finished, it is expected to significantly enhance Zakho’s appeal as a tourist destination and attract more visitors.
