During a meeting with a delegation of Assyrian dignitaries from the United States, Kurdish leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the protection of religious communities.
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday received a delegation of Assyrian dignitaries from the United States, led by Sam Darmo, President of Assyrians for Justice.
During the meeting, the Assyrian officials commended the Kurdistan Region for fostering a culture of peaceful coexistence and respect for freedoms, the KRG readout said.
Prime Minister Barzani reaffirmed the KRG’s commitment to protecting the rights of all communities and further strengthening coexistence and religious freedom across the Kurdistan Region.
Also on Sunday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received the Assyrian delegation and discussed the circumstances facing Assyrians and other communities in Iraq. During the meeting, the delegation thanked the Kurdistan Region for its ongoing support and cooperation since 2003, as the region has provided a safe haven for Assyrians and others.

In response, President Nechirvan Barzani declared the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to safeguarding religious communities and commended the contributions and cooperation of Assyrians in various aspects of life in the Kurdistan Region.
In July, Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations Safeen Dizayee welcomed an Assyrian American delegation led by Sam Darmo at the KRG Representation in Washington, D.C., and attended the Assyrian Martyrs Day commemoration in the U.S. Capitol.
At the time, the KRG Representation in the U.S. wrote on X: “We honor the deep historic ties between Kurds and Assyrians and look forward to continued partnership.”
Furthermore, the Assyrian delegation was welcomed by President Masoud Barzani on Monday, who “affirmed that the Assyrian community and all other components of Kurdistan are the genuine people of the country, and that their destiny is bound together.”
According to the readout from Barzani headquarters, “he emphasized that both in the past and in the future, they will live together in freedom and dignity.”
President Masoud Barzani also stressed that all institutions and bodies in the Kurdistan Region support and assist all the displaced who have settled in the region, so that they may feel a sense of belonging, stability, peace, and build a prosperous future in Kurdistan.
