On Thursday, Kurdish leaders commemorated the 64th anniversary of the September Revolution against the Iraqi regime.
The September Revolution broke out in 1961 after talks between the Kurds and Baghdad failed. Thereafter, the Iraqi regime launched a military campaign against the Kurdish revolutionary forces.
After years of fighting, Baghdad agreed to grant autonomy to the Kurds on March 11, 1970. However, the decision was never implemented on the ground, leading to a new war.
“On the 64th anniversary of the Great September Revolution, we are reminded of the importance of unity of all Kurdistanis in defending our national rights and achievements, and safeguarding the constitutional integrity of the Kurdistan Region,” Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani posted on X.

“The great September Revolution — at a time of turmoil and hardship, when oppression and denial were imposed on the people of Kurdistan from every side — became the identity and foundation of national and patriotic consciousness,” President Nechirvan Barzani said in a statement.
“It gave new life to the struggle and enabled the people of Kurdistan to stand firm. It became a shelter for all communities and groups, and carried the call for the rights and freedom of the people of Kurdistan to the entire world, presenting them as a living nation that loves life and seeks peace.”
President Masoud Barzani extended his “appreciation and recognition to all the cadres, Peshmerga, and strugglers who, through their perseverance, sacrifices, and dedication, recorded history and pride for their nation.
“On this occasion, we send thousands of greetings to the martyrs of the September Revolution and to all the martyrs who gave their lives on the path of Kurdistan’s freedom.”
