Senior Kurdish leaders on Monday again reiterated that the victims of the genocidal Anfal Campaign should be compensated.
“On the 37th anniversary of the Anfal genocide campaign in Badinan, we remember the victims of this brutal crime by the former Iraqi regime,” Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani posted on X.
“The federal government must compensate their families. We honor the memory of martyrs of the Anfal genocide and all martyrs of Kurdistan.”

During the Anfal Campaign, an operation carried out against the Kurds by the Ba’athist regime in Iraq between February and September 1988, 182,000 Kurds lost their lives, properties were looted, and women and children were forced into labor camps.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani underlined that the Anfal Campaign was another chapter in the chain of crimes committed by the former Iraqi regime against the people of Kurdistan.

“On this occasion, we once again urge the federal government of Iraq to take serious steps to recognize and honor the victims of the Badinan Anfal and all crimes committed by the former regime. The Iraqi High Tribunal has recognized the Anfal Campaign as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity; therefore, the rights of the victims must be restored in every possible way.”
