On Sunday, in a meeting at Salahaddin, President Masoud Barzani welcomed the newly appointed U.S. Consul General in Erbil Wendy Green, who underlined President Barzani’s important role in Iraqi politics.
She is the first female U.S. Consul General to serve in the Kurdistan Region.
According to a readout from President Barzani’s office, the new U.S. Consul General praised President Barzani’s key role in stabilizing the political situation at both the Iraqi and Kurdistan Region levels.

She also stressed the importance of maintaining a strong, lasting, and mutual relationship between the United States and the Kurdistan Region.
The meeting was also attended by Steve Bitner, the outgoing U.S. Consul General in Erbil.
U.S. Consul General Green also met with Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Representative Treefa Aziz in the United States ahead of her departure to Kurdistan.
“We wish her every success as she begins her new role and works to further strengthen our shared ties,” Aziz posted on X.

The United States government has a strong bilateral and historical relationship with the Kurdistan Region in terms of trade, security, and the fight against ISIS.
In 2022, a renewed non-binding memorandum of understanding was signed by the U.S. Department of Defense and the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs in 2022.

Additionally, during Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s visit to the United States in May, the KRG signed two multi-billion-dollar agreements with two oil international companies, estimated to be worth a combined $110 billion.
“Cooperation between the U. S. and the Iraqi Kurdistan Region contributes to the stability within Iraq and the broader region,” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said after a call with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on May 29.
“Key economic partnerships with U.S. companies also benefit both the American and Iraqi peoples.”
