UNAMI Head Voices Concern Over Drone Attacks on Kurdistan

The Head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Mohamed al-Hassan on Tuesday expressed concerns over the continued drone attacks on the Kurdistan Region.

According to a readout from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), during his meeting with the UNAMI Head al-Hassan KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani “called for an end to the terrorist attacks on the Kurdistan Region’s energy infrastructure and for legal actions to be taken against the perpetrators.”

In a post on X, UNAMI said that during the meeting the officials discussed “the recent drone attacks targeting the area and their negative impact on stability, with emphasis on preventing their recurrence and the need to prosecute their perpetrators.”

Furthermore, during a separate meeting between Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and UNAMI Head al-Hassan, the two officials also discussed the nearly 20 drone attacks that have been carried out on the Kurdistan Region since July 14.

The latest incident occurred yesterday. According to information from the Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Group, at 5:50 am on Monday, an explosive-laden drone crashed in the Rizgari subdistrict of the Khabat district in Erbil Governorate, causing no casualties.

According to the readout from the Kurdistan Region Presidency, al-Hassan expressed concern over the drone attacks and underscored the need to prevent such incidents.

He also reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting the resolution of issues between Erbil and Baghdad.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani told AP that the attacks were a “terrorist” act and that Baghdad is working with the KRG and coalition forces to identify those responsible and hold them accountable.
