US Condemns Drone Attacks on Kurdistan’s Gas and Oil Fields

The United States on Tuesday condemned the attacks in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, including the “July 14 and July 15 drone attacks on critical infrastructure at the Khormala and Sarsang oil fields in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.”

The Sarsang oil field is operated by the US oil company HKN oil, which signed a deal with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Washington in May.

The Government of Iraq must exercise its authority to prevent armed actors from launching these attacks against sites within its own territory,” the US government said.

“These attacks are unacceptable, undermine Iraq’s sovereignty, and hurt Iraq’s efforts to attract foreign investment.  We urge the Government of Iraq to investigate who is behind these attacks and hold them accountable.”

The Kurdistan Region Presidency also strongly condemned the drone strikes in Khurmala and Sarsang.

“The Iraqi federal government must implement all essential and prompt actions to avert these attacks, and identify and penalize those responsible. Such attacks pose a risk to the country’s stability, sovereignty, and both domestic and international investments,” the Kurdistan Region Presidency said.

The KRG Ministry of Natural Resources on Monday stated that two drones targeted the Khurmal gas field in the Erbil Governorate. Then, on Tuesday morning the Sarsang oil field in Duhok’s Chamanke district was also targeted.

“A terrorist attack was carried out on the Sarsang oil field in Chamanke district of Duhok province on Tuesday morning. There were no casualties in the attack,” the KRG Ministry of Natural Resources said on Tuesday.

“The attack follows two drone bombings on the Khurmala oil field in Erbil province yesterday evening. The Ministry of Natural Resources strongly condemns such attacks on the economic infrastructure of the Kurdistan Region.”

HKN Energy, in a press release seen by Kurdistan Chronicle, also confirmed “that an explosion occurred earlier today at approximately 7:00 am local time at one of its production facilities in the Sarsang field, located in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.”

“All personnel have been safely accounted for, and no injuries have been reported. Emergency response teams are on site and have contained the damage.”

HKN said operations at the affected facility have been suspended until the site is secured and a full evaluation is completed.

The Ministry of Natural Resources yesterday said the Khurmala oil field attack caused no casualties but did result in damage to the facility’s water pipelines. The Kurdistan Region’s Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) confirmed two drones had targeted Khurmala oil field yesterday, without causing any damage.

There has been an increase in drone attacks in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region since the 12-day war between Israel and Iran. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

According to information from the CTD, an explosive drone was also shot down near Erbil International Airport on Monday. “Fortunately, no human or material damage was reported,” the CTD said.
