The KRG Ministry of Electricity on Tuesday announced that more than two million citizens, or around 30% of the Kurdistan Region’s population, now have 24-hour electricity under the Runaki program.

“With today’s switch, most citizens across all three major cities of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok now have access to 24-hour electricity, with coverage extended to Erbil’s 150-meter ring road and Sulaymaniyah’s 60-meter ring road,” the Ministry said.

Two months ago, Aziz Ahmad, Deputy Chief of Staff to KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, announced on X that over one million citizens in the Kurdistan Region had 24-hour electricity access thanks to the Runaki initiative.

“The goal is to complete coverage of all city centers by the end of 2025, and extend to surrounding areas by the end of 2026,” a member of the Runaki team told Kurdistan Chronicle last month.

“Nearly 1,300 private generators have been shut down due to the expanded grid coverage. The project addresses long-standing dependence on costly and polluting private generators,” the official concluded.
