Oil Companies Call For Resumption of Kurdistan Exports

The Association of the Petroleum Industry of Kurdistan (APIKUR), which represents several international oil companies in the Kurdistan Region, on Wednesday called for the reopening of the Iraq-Turkiye Pipeline (ITP).

“The ITP provides Iraq a secure export route to global oil markets at Ceyhan port. Resuming exports through the ITP adds 300,000+ barrels to the international market,” the APIKUR said in a post on X.

“Once we have payment surety for past and future exports, APIKUR member companies are prepared to immediately resume exports through the ITP.”

On March 25, 2023, Kurdish crude oil exports through Turkiye were stopped after an international arbitration court ruled in favor of Baghdad against Ankara, halting 450,000 barrels per day of crude oil exports to international markets.

“Due to a lawsuit by the federal government against Turkiye in a Paris court, oil exports were halted in 2023. As a result, more than $25 billion in losses were incurred by the Kurdistan Region,” Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani told reporters on Wednesday.

“These damages were returned to the federal government of Iraq, but the Iraqi government has not compensated the people of the Kurdistan Region for this loss. Since the oil exports stopped, many of the oil companies operating here were unable to continue production at the required levels, leading to a sharp decrease in production.

“We have remained in continuous dialogue with officials in Baghdad, including Iraq’s Ministry of Oil and the KRG Ministry of Natural Resources. Discussions are ongoing about the region’s capabilities regarding oil exports,” he concluded.
