Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Monday strongly condemned Sunday’s suicide attack at the Mar Elias Church in Damascus.
“My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all those affected. We stand firmly for freedom of faith and against terror in all its forms,” he posted on X.
According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 22 civilians were killed and nearly 60 others were injured, including women and children.
Syria’s Ministry of Interior said in a statement that the suicide bomber was a member of ISIS.
So far, the group has not claimed the attack.
Kurdish leaders have constantly warned about the threat of ISIS.
“We don’t think that terrorism has come to an end. ISIS is still intact with active members, not only in Iraq, but in the region and elsewhere in the world,” Prime Minister Barzani stated last year during the Middle East Peace and Security Forum in November.
