U.S. Ambassador Steven H. Fagin assumed his duties as interim Charge d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on May 29, 2025. Previously, he served as Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil from 2018 to 2020.
The U.S. Embassy in Iraq announced on X on Tuesday that “Ambassador Fagin brings extensive knowledge of Iraq, having served here twice.”

Ambassador Fagin also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad from 2020 to 2021.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani received Fagin on 1 June to congratulate him on the official start of his mission.
