Christian Alliance Files Complaint Over Salary Halt

The Christian Alliance in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region on Friday, May 30, announced it had filed an official complaint against the federal government and the Iraqi Ministry of Finance over violations of human and constitutional rights.

The Christian Alliance in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region said it had submitted an official complaint to the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights, protesting the recent decision by the federal government and the Ministry of Finance to halt financial transfers and salary payments to public employees in the Kurdistan Region.

The complaint, endorsed by several Christian political and social organizations, described the decision issued on May 20, 2025, by the Iraqi Ministry of Finance as a blatant violation of fundamental human rights and a breach of constitutional and ethical principles, placing the lives of thousands of citizens at risk and subjecting them to poverty, illness, and deprivation of basic necessities.

“When people’s livelihoods are used as a political bargaining chip, we cross a dangerous moral line that no self-respecting state should ever approach. We are not asking for privileges, but for constitutional and human rights that are non-negotiable,” Ano Jawhar Abdoka, Secretary-General of the Christian Alliance, stated on X.

The Christian Alliance also said the decision is in clear contradiction with the 2023 Federal Budget Law, which obligates the Ministry of Finance to fulfill its financial commitments toward the Kurdistan Region.
