Mustafa Barzani was born on March 14, 1903, in Barzan, a village on the eastern shores of the Great Zab River in Erbil Governorate.

He founded the Kurdistan Democratic Party, which remains the largest Kurdish party today, and is the father of President Masoud Barzani, as well as the grandfather of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

Every year in March, people across Kurdistan plant trees in honor of their beloved revolutionary leader, General Barzani. In addition, people come from all over Kurdistan and the world from March 1-14 to visit Barzani’s tomb in Barzan to commemorate his life and legacy.

The BCF said that the seminar, titled “Understanding the Legacy of General Mustafa Barzani Through First-hand Testimony and Scholarly Insight,” shed light on Barzani’s struggle, leadership, and his role in establishing peace and coexistence in Kurdistan.

During the event, Syamand Bana – former personal interpreter to General Barzani and former Iraqi Ambassador to the Netherlands – offered a first-hand perspective on Barzani’s vision and leadership.

Additionally, the seminar emphasized the impact of the concept of the Path of Coexistence, which was outlined by the late Barzani and remains an important principle in Kurdistan.

Janroj Keles, Associate Professor at Middlesex University – whose academic work focuses on Kurdish identity, nationalism, and diaspora politics – also reflected on Barzani’s strategic legacy and its implications for today’s political dynamics in Kurdistan and the wider region.

The attendees included individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds, as well as Kurds from all four parts of Kurdistan. Additionally, several political figures, academics, and social researchers from the Middle East participated.

The BCF operates in several countries worldwide and was officially recognized in 2020 by the UK Charity Commission.
