Kurdish leaders on Wednesday commemorate the 34th anniversary of the March 1991 uprising against the brutal regime of Saddam Hussein, a turning point in the Kurdish struggle for freedom that eventually led to the establishment of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said that on this significant occasion, he conveyed his “heartfelt congratulations to the families of the martyrs, the peshmerga heroes, the people of Kurdistan, and all its diverse communities.

“The uprising was a pivotal moment in history, showcasing the unwavering determination of the people of Kurdistan in their fight against dictatorship and oppression. Driven by a firm conviction in the righteousness of their cause, they united in pursuit of liberty, dignity, and justice, paving the way for a new future.”
KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in a separate statement also extended his warmest congratulations to all Kurdistanis, especially to the peshmerga and the families of the martyrs.
“One of the greatest achievements of the people of Kurdistan – something that will always be a source of pride for us – is the nationwide uprising of the people of Kurdistan. All components of our society participated in it, and through the unity and solidarity of the people of Kurdistan and the Kurdish forces and parties, the Kurdistan Region was liberated from oppression and occupation.
“As a result of free and democratic elections, the Kurdistan Parliament and the KRG were established.”
