Iraq’s National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji on Saturday met with Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Interior Rebar Ahmed to follow up on the implementation of the security agreement between Iraq and Iran, as well as the jurisdictional overlap between Baghdad and Erbil.

“Today, Qassim al-Araji and I held a joint meeting to follow up on the implementation of the security agreement between Iraq and Iran. We discussed the latest developments and ongoing procedures,” Minister Ahmed posted on X.

The joint security agreement that was signed in March 2023 includes coordination in protecting the common borders between the two countries and consolidating cooperation in several security fields.

This agreement required the Iraqi government and the KRG to remove Iranian Kurdish opposition forces from border areas and ensure no attacks against Iran were launched from Iraqi territory.

The meeting comes amid unconfirmed rumors that Iran is planning an attack on Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.

Additionally, Minister Ahmed held a separate joint meeting with al-Araji and the UN where they discussed the case of individuals convicted and sentenced by Kurdistan Region courts but still summoned to Iraqi courts for the same charges.

We explored legal solutions to settle their status in Iraq, ensuring they can return to their place of origin without facing double sentencing for the same offence,” Minister Ahmed posted on X.
