The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday condemned the suicide drone attack that targeted the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaymaniyah’s Chamchamal district on Sunday, February 2.

“We condemn the attack on the Khor Mor gas field and urge the Government of Iraq to hold the perpetrators accountable,” the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad said.

The attack caused no damage to the field or the gas company.

Kurdish security forces blamed a militia group based in the Bashir area in southern Kirkuk.

The Kurdistan Regional Government Ministry of Natural Resources said that the gas production at the field remains unaffected and that gas supply to the power stations continues as normal.

UAE-based energy company Dana Gas, which operates Khor Mor gas field, also said in a statement on Monday that production operations continued as normal, and that they remain in close coordination with all relevant authorities and security forces to ensure continuing safe operations.

On April 26, 2024, four Yemeni workers were killed in a drone attack carried out by unknown perpetrators on the Khor Mor field.

Production from the Khor Mor gas processing plant and the 180-kilometer pipeline supplies gas-to-power stations in Chamchamal, Bazian, and Erbil, generating over 2,000 MW of electricity.

In September 2021, a $250 million financing agreement was signed by the companies that run the field with the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation for a major expansion project in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
