Hundreds of government officials, foreign diplomats, and families of victims gathered on Saturday to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the 2004 bombings in Erbil that killed 101 people and injured hundreds more.

“The February 1st bombings were an attack on all of Kurdistan,” Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, who attended the ceremony, posted on X.

“Today, we honor the martyrs and reaffirm the importance of unity in the face of adversity and tyranny.”

The twin bombings on February 1, 2004, targeted the headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan while people were celebrating the first day of Eid al-Adha. This resulted in the death of 101 Kurdish leaders, politicians, and members of the security forces.

Among the victims were dozens of senior officials from both the Kurdish parties, including Sami Abdul Rahman, after whom the park in Erbil where the annual memorial takes place is named.

In a commemoration message Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani underlined that the victims of the February 1 attacks “became a symbol of the shared blood of the people of Kurdistan.

“Every year, we must use this remembrance of the terrorist act as an opportunity for self-reflection and a renewed commitment to unity, brotherhood, and solidarity.”
