President Masoud Barzani on Sunday welcomed a statement by Syria’s de facto leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa, regarding the Kurdish people in Syria, in which he described the Kurdish people as part of the homeland and partners in the future of Syria.
“This perspective on the Kurds and the future of Syria brings us joy and is warmly welcomed. We hope that this marks the beginning of correcting the course of history and rectifying the wrong and unjust practices that have been committed against the Kurdish people in Syria,” President Barzani said.
“Such a vision is a positive step toward building a strong Syria. Kurds, Arabs, and all other components of Syria must seize this opportunity to work together in constructing a stable, free, and democratic Syria.”
On December 8, 2024, armed rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, under the command of al-Sharaa, captured the Syrian capital, Damascus, forcing longtime ruler President Bashar al-Assad to flee the country.
Kurds are now concerned about the future of Syrian Kurds after the fall of the Assad regime.

NBC reported that HTS leader al-Sharaa sought to ease fears with a statement to the Kurds on Saturday, stating that Kurds are “part of the homeland” and “there will be no injustice” against them.
“The coming Syria will have the Kurds as its foundations, and we will live together in it, and everyone will have their rights,” he said.
