Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani in a statement on Sunday urged all involved parties to engage in dialogue and pursue a peaceful resolution in Syria – – including rights for the Kurdish people – – after the fall of the Ba’ath regime in Syria on Sunday following a lightning offensive by Syria’s rebel groups.
“We in the Kurdistan Region are closely monitoring the developments in Syria. We urge all involved parties to engage in dialogue and pursue a peaceful resolution that guarantees justice and equality for all communities in Syria, including the Kurdish people, while ensuring their meaningful involvement in determining the country’s future.”
“The Kurdistan Region reiterates its dedication to fostering a harmonious relationship within Iraq while striving to enhance both regional and international collaboration aimed at promoting stability in Syria,” he added.
“We firmly oppose any conflicts that may exacerbate the circumstances in the region, and we underscore the importance of safeguarding security, stability, and the interests of all peoples and communities in the region.”
Moreover, he stressed the necessity of consolidating both international and regional initiatives to secure a stable future for Syria.
“We urge the global community and neighboring nations to actively participate in seeking a peaceful resolution, and we reiterate our commitment to the aspirations of the Syrian people for peace and liberty.”
The Kurdistan Regional Government in a statement on Sunday also stated “the swift changes and the fall of the authoritarian regime in Syria have ushered in a new era.”
“We respect the decisions and will of the Syrian people and hope for a future Syria that is free, peaceful, democratic, and stable, where the rights of all peoples and communities are protected.”
Furthermore, the Political Bureau of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in a statement added that they “hope the upcoming phase will mark the end of turmoil and the beginning of a new era of peace, stability, and coexistence.”
“We also wish for mutual acceptance among all components of the country and the establishment of a prosperous environment with suitable opportunities for the Syrian people to live a dignified life in all aspects.”
