In a meeting with Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday, Germany’s new Consul General in Erbil Albrecht Von Wittke underlined the importance of forming a new cabinet.

Germany has been one of the main countries to support the peshmerga in the fight against ISIS by providing training and equipment – including anti-tank guided missile systems – since 2014.

Moreover, on October 17, an overwhelming majority in the German parliament voted to extend the German army mission in Iraq until January 31, 2026. As a result, Germany will continue to deploy 500 soldiers to Iraq.
“By continued participation in the Nato Mission Iraq and the anti-ISIS Coalition alongside our friends and allies, we will continue to contribute to peace and stability in the region, including in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq,” Germany’s Consulate General in Erbil posted on X on October 20.
