British International University Inaugurated in Erbil

On September 7, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani inaugurated the British international University in Erbil in a ceremony attended by University of London Vice Chancellor Professor Wendy Thomson and members of the UK House of Lords Lord Paul Boateng and Baroness Emma Nicholson.

“This was a momentous and great occasion. I was honored to be present,” Baroness Nicholson posted on X.

The ceremony also was attended by KRG ministers, Governor of Erbil Omed Khoshnaw, and UK Consul General in Erbil Andrew Bizley.

“The opening of this university is the opening of a door to rich experiences and the educational approach of British universities for the Kurdistan Region,” Prime Minister Barzani said in his speech.

“This step will have a significant impact on advancing the level of higher education in the Kurdistan Region and, at the same time, will strengthen the ties between the Kurdistan Region and the UK in cultural, scientific, and economic fields.”

“Our country is rich in human resources, and we have a young society. Therefore, we must invest in our youth and guide them to actively participate in building a better future for our country.”

“One of the ways to invest in our youth and their capabilities is to provide them with scientific and academic opportunities. With the opening of each university, our confidence in a better future increases.”

“This university will play a significant and influential role in training competent professionals and experts. Graduates from this university will play a key role in the process of developing and advancing our country,” he underlined.

The British International University has been under development since 2017 and opened its doors in 2023.

Senior Advisor to Prime Minister Barzani Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman wrote on X that “the university marks a significant milestone as the first branch of the University of London in the Middle East.”

The University of London, founded in 1986, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the UK.
