Germany’s Consulate General in Erbil on July 4 announced that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs (MoPA) and the German Army had launched a joint project worth €3.2 million in Erbil.

“Germany continues its support for the peshmerga, particularly for peshmerga reform,” the Consulate General said. 

In a post on X on July 3, MoPA said the meeting was attended by KRG Minister of Peshmerga Affairs Shorish Ismail Abdulla and Peshmerga Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Issa Ozer, Germany’s Consul General Klaus Streicher, and Colonel Lars Persikowski, the commander of the German forces in the Kurdistan Region.

“An agreement was signed between the two parties allowing the German government and military to provide further support to the peshmerga forces.”

Germany has supported the peshmerga in the fight against ISIS by providing training and equipment since 2014.

Furthermore, Germany has backed the Peshmerga Reform Project, alongside the United States, Italy, the UK, and the Netherlands.

Germany has also provided economic, development, and humanitarian aid to the Kurdistan Region, and the Bundestag has recognized the atrocities committed by ISIS against the Yezidis as genocide.
